Predictions for this week's astronomical event
By Lisa Stardust & Kaitlin Sansoucie
Lisa Stardust and Kaitlin Sansoucie prepare us for the February 15th Solar Eclipse in Aquarius.
Get ready to step into newness this week! You’ve likely heard that there’s a solar eclipse coming, but how much do you really know about what eclipses do, astrologically speaking? In a nutshell, eclipses serve the purpose of shaking-up our lives for the better. In eclipse periods, the Universe uses a more forceful hand to stir the pot and help us realize the changes we need to implement in our own lives. It’s important to always work with the current cosmic vibe–if we don’t adjust our lives to the new energy, the universe will do it for us, and sometimes it’s not pretty. Still, it is always for our soul’s growth, and this can help us keep the less than pleasant transits in perspective.
Whether it be by reaching out to the community, adjusting habits, reforming beliefs, or refining your social calendar–prepare yourself for dynamic shifts for the remainder of the month.
This new moon eclipse is in the sign of Aquarius, and, being a humanitarian sign by nature, Aquarius inspires to find value in the self through compassionate acts. The ego is second to the Water-Bearer, who was adored by Zeus. First, comes pride in assisting others.
Using their unique brilliance, Aquarians have the ability to problem solve any issue using their refined observant behavior.
THE MYTH OF AQUARIUS
For the ancient pantheists, the Gods were their greatest teachers. They were not perfect; they were simply above humanity. Lessons about self-worth and agency as well as humility and consequence are woven into ancient mythologies that span the globe. The story of Ganymede, a beautiful young prince who was chosen by Zeus (i.e., kidnapped) to be his cupbearer (i.e., servant/lover), demonstrates the relationship between humanity and the gods of the Greek Pantheon from multiple angles.
As the story goes, Zeus saw the teenage Ganymede tending sheep in his father’s field and decided he wanted him for himself, which was thoroughly within his powers as the most powerful god in the Pantheon. He transformed himself into a giant eagle and carried the boy back to Mount Olympus in his mighty talons. Ganymede served as Zeus’ cupbearer, which meant that his task was to keep Zeus’ thirst sated by bringing him goblets of ambrosia and water whenever the god liked. The boy was not happy with this arrangement, and before long he rebelled, pouring out all of the cups in the heavens, which rained down on earth causing a massive flood that engulfed the world. Ganymede not only took a stand against Zeus and the order of the gods but against the society that worshipped them, including his father, who had accepted a gift of horses in appeasement for his missing son.
Apparently, Ganymede felt it was worth risking everything to say enough was enough. Granted, he probably didn’t realize that he was flooding the planet when he emptied those cups down the great mountain, but even still, he had chosen to act on impulse against oppression. If anyone on earth had thought of doing this in a hypothetical sense before this situation had occurred, they would’ve been stricken with fear -if not a lightning bolt- at the thought of going against the gods, but since Ganymede rose up in a moment of pure truth, saying “I am not going to take this, anymore” he inspired Zeus’ own humility. Instead of being angry, Zeus made the rebel immortal as the constellation we know as Aquarius.
As he eternal cupbearer, Aquarius represents independent thought paired with concern for nourishing the greater good through selfless and also innovative action. Aquarians think far outside of the box and somehow remain simultaneously of service to their community and also maintain their own opinions and beliefs. They have seen the big picture from the top of the mountain and often refer to that experience to help people who lack perspective.
THE STAR CARD AQUARIUS
The Star card in tarot is related to the Water Bearer, Aquarius, who bore the responsibility of nourishing the gods and now similarly serves humanity with this ability. The character in this card has one foot on land, grounded in reality and what can be seen on the surface, and one foot submerged in the water- a symbol of the unknown, the subconscious, and intuition. She is naked, unadorned, thoroughly herself. She returns some water to the source, which shows that she honors the divine, and pours the contents of another jug onto the fertile ground around her, which symbolizes her nurturing nature. The number of this card is 17, which reduces to 8 (1+7=8) in numerology, the number of infinite energy and renewal. Overall, the Star card represents hope for the future, which always depends on our being present in the moment. Make a wish and pay attention to how it may manifest!
